Telly Night, A Family Pick-What-to-Watch App

Turns "there’s nothing on" into a ranked shortlist in seconds

A mobile-first app that ends the 40-minute scroll. Everyone in the house rates the shows they have seen, and Telly Night ranks what to watch next with a match score, built-in age guidance and where to stream it. Kid-safe by design, free forever.

The Problem

Every household knows the ritual: forty minutes of browsing, three trailers, two arguments, and then everyone gives up and watches nothing. Streaming services are built to keep you scrolling, not to help a family of different ages actually agree on something to put on. Telly Night was built to settle the remote, fast.

What It Does

Set up everyone in the house, tap stars on the shows you have already watched, and Telly Night learns what each person likes. When it is time to choose, it ranks what to watch next for the whole household, with a match score, clear age guidance, and the platform it is streaming on right now.

  • Per-person ratings. Toddler, teenager, the grown-ups, everyone rates separately. Five stars means more like this, one means never again.
  • A real recommendation engine. Picks are ranked from the whole family’s taste, learning across genre, mood, tone and age band rather than a single generic feed.
  • Built-in age guidance. Clear, family-fit guidance on every title so you know what is safe for the little one before you press play.
  • Live where-to-watch. Real titles and posters pulled live, filtered to the streaming services you actually pay for.

How It Is Built

Telly Night is a Next.js app with secure sign-in via Clerk, household and ratings data in Postgres, and a live feed of titles, posters and availability from the TMDB API. It runs on Railway and is mobile-first throughout, since the decision almost always happens on the sofa with a phone in hand.

The Outcome

Instead of doom-scrolling the home screen, a household gets a ranked shortlist of things everyone is likely to enjoy, with the age guidance already done. It is live and free to try at tellynight.com.
